The Holistic Difference
"Natural." "Organic." "Clean." "Holistic." Skin care has stretched these words so far that they've started to mean whatever a label wants them to mean. We use one of them constantly — holistic — and we think it deserves an actual definition, not just a vibe.
So here's what we mean by it, and where it actually differs from the words next to it on the shelf.
A Spectrum, Not a Checklist
We think of skin care less as a set of boxes to check and more as a spectrum — Conventional, then Clean, then Natural, then, at the far end, where we've always worked. Each step removes something. Very few steps actually add back a working relationship with skin biology. That gap is the whole difference between "holistic" and everything to its left.
What Clean Beauty Gets Right
Clean beauty removes the obvious offenders — no parabens, no sulfates, no synthetic fragrance, often certified organic ingredients. That's real progress, and worth crediting. But "clean" is a subtraction standard, not a formulation philosophy. A clean product can still be built around emulsifiers and synthetic preservatives; it's frequently water-based with botanical extracts added in, rather than built around the whole plant from the start.
What Natural Beauty Adds — and Still Misses
Natural beauty goes further. Botanical ingredients run throughout the formula, not just as an additive; preservatives and emulsifiers are plant-derived instead of synthetic; some brands do genuine whole-plant infusions. This is meaningfully better than clean. But oil and water are still combined into a single emulsion, and barrier disruption is still possible — because an emulsifier's job, plant-derived or not, is to force two things together that skin was never built to receive as one.

What Holistic Actually Requires
Holistic isn't a longer ingredient checklist. It's a formulation philosophy built around skin biology itself, not around what a formula is missing. In practice, that means whole plants slow-infused rather than reduced to extracts. No emulsifiers in our core formulas. No synthetic preservatives, full stop. Oil and water delivered separately, by design, because that's how skin's own sebaceous and sweat systems already work. Every ingredient something skin biologically recognizes, rather than something it has to tolerate.

Why the Word Keeps Getting Diluted
"Holistic" is an easy word to put on a label, because unlike "organic" or "paraben-free," nobody's checking it against a formulation. That's exactly why the real test isn't the word at all — it's whether the formula still asks skin's biology to accommodate something foreign to it. We work from the far end of the spectrum. We always have, and it's the standard we'd want applied to us, too.
