Practitioner Education Series · Module 05 of 06
An introductory guide to the Wilder North Apothecary collection — oils, treatment bases, honey bases, honey elixirs, amplifying powders, extract gels, compress herbs, and artisan hydrosols for bespoke in-treatment formulation.
What the Apothecary Is
The Wilder North Apothecary Backbar is a separate and more advanced collection available exclusively to Apothecary partners who have completed the opening package. Where the core backbar gives you our finished formulas, the Apothecary gives you the building blocks to go further — to hand-blend bespoke treatments on the spot, customized to exactly what each client's skin is communicating in the moment.
There are no fixed protocols in the Apothecary. No prescribed formulas. No same-for-everyone approach. You are the formulator. You bring your expertise, your observation, your intuition — and the Apothecary gives you the deep green whole-plant ingredients to express it.
"What I love about having an apothecary product line is having every ingredient I need for your skin right at my fingertips. Now I can choose out of 22 apothecary items which formulation is going to be best for you." — Jen, Love & Esthetics
Each item in the collection falls into one of eight categories. The bases — both powdered treatment bases and honey bases — are the bulk and starting point of any treatment you wish to craft. You then add amplifications, elixirs, or hydrosols as you see fit to create your ideal blend.
Rules of Thumb
Think of the Apothecary in layers. Start with your base. Add amplifying ingredients. Activate with hydrosol or oil. Here is how each category functions:
Category 01
Our Apothecary oils are whole-plant macerations — not standardized extracts, not essential oils. Each one is slow-infused so that the full spectrum of the plant's chemistry transfers into the oil and remains intact. Use for facial massage, gua sha, oil cleansing, or add a few drops to any base for a creamy, moisture-rich texture.
Category 02
The powdered treatment base is the foundation of your bespoke mask. Select based on your client's primary skin concern and skin type, then add amplifying ingredients to build the treatment. These bases may be combined with honey bases for a richer, more nourishing mask.
Category 03
Our honey bases are rich, medicinal masking bases — excellent for suspending herbal powders, for honey tapping treatments, or blended with powdered bases for a more nourishing finish. Store at room temperature or warmer to maintain a workable consistency. If honey crystallizes, place in your towel warmer to gently warm.
Category 04
Raw Vermont Meadow Honey infused for 6-8 weeks with targeted botanicals. Add just a small dollop of these concentrated elixirs to enhance your treatment base — they require very little to make a significant difference. Store at room temperature or warmer. Recommend warming in your towel warmer before use.
Category 05
Concentrated oil-based botanical elixirs designed to enhance your treatment with just 4-5 drops added to your base of choice. Each is a whole-plant formulation — never an isolate — preserving the full spectrum of therapeutic chemistry.
Category 06
Whole plants extracted for two weeks into moisturizing organic vegetable glycerin to form a concentrated plant extract. These extracts treat specific skin conditions, plump skin, and pull hydration into the transepidermal layers. May be blended with complimentary ingredients or applied as a thin layer as a treatment before removing. Keep sealed at all times and use the pump dispenser to avoid contamination.
Category 07
Intended to enhance your treatment with just a quarter teaspoon. Most of these are made from herbs and fibrous plants — steep with a few drops of liquid for a minute before adding more liquid to achieve desired consistency. Berry, fruit, and greens powders need less water as they are finer. Note that our signature powders can sometimes leave behind small particles — use a damp sponge to remove excess particles if needed.
Category 08
Steep as a tea and soak your facial towels before placing in your towel warmer. Alternatively chill the tea and use it as an addition to your facial treatments in place of hydrosol or water. You may also add to herbal poultices. These herbs are most useful for making facial compresses — a deeply sensory and therapeutic step that elevates your treatment beyond what any product alone can achieve.
Category 09
Our seasonal Rare Native Hydrosols are artisan steam distilled on our New Hampshire property using our copper alembic still, solar energy, and water drawn from the natural aquifer beneath our land. Each is a limited batch — availability changes with the season and harvest. A minute amount of essential oil is retained in each hydrosol for better scent and more potent benefits. These are lovely added to honey bases or spritzed directly onto client skin. Store at room temperature or cooler; may be refrigerated to lengthen shelf life.

Safety
Safety first. Although many plants are safe for most people, it is extremely important to note your client's medical conditions, allergies, and sensitivities during their first consultation, before you touch their skin. Some ingredients do not have safety data or studies for use while nursing or pregnant. Some ingredients are NOT recommended for pregnant or nursing women or individuals with medical conditions.
For pregnant clients, go simple: plain honey, colloidal oats, double rose powder, antioxidant berry powder, or fruit enzymes are your safest choices.
⚠️ Not Safe for Pregnancy, Nursing, or Certain Medical Conditions
The following Apothecary ingredients carry significant contraindications and should NOT be used on pregnant or nursing clients, or those with immune-compromising conditions, malignant tumors, thrombosis, major heart problems, kidney problems, bronchial asthma, thyroid problems, those on medications or undergoing chemotherapy, or children under 18:
Respite Elixir / Respite Herbs · Fortify Elixir / Fortify Herbs · Lymphatic Elixir
Additionally: Soothing Herbals Powder — likely safe during pregnancy but better to avoid due to Comfrey content. Marshmallow Root Extract — OK for pregnancy, not for bleeding disorders.
Always collect health and pregnancy status information when you first consult with a client. Individuals should consult a medical professional if they have any of the above conditions.
