How macerations, hydrosols, CO₂ extracts, and tinctures actually work — and why the method changes what ends up in the bottle
Method Is Not a Technicality
Take a single plant — say, calendula. Depending on how it's processed, calendula can become an oil-infused maceration, a hydrosol, a CO₂ extract, a tincture, or a dried whole botanical steeped in a tea. Each of those five preparations contains meaningfully different chemistry, because each extraction method pulls out a different portion of what the plant contains.
This is why "contains calendula" tells you almost nothing on its own. A formulator's choice of extraction method is as important as the choice of plant — and it's a choice most ingredient lists never explain. This module walks through the methods that actually matter for skin care, what each one does and doesn't capture, and which ones you'll find across the Wilder North line.
The Core Method
This is the foundation of nearly every Wilder North serum, balm, and oil. The whole plant — fresh or dried, organically grown or wildcrafted — is submerged completely in a carrier oil and left to infuse over an extended period, with no heat and no solvent involved.
What transfers into the oil is the plant's fat-soluble chemistry: terpenoids, certain flavonoids, waxes, chlorophylls, carotenoids, and fat-soluble vitamins. Because there's no heat and no chemical solvent, delicate compounds that would otherwise degrade survive intact. This is a slow method — macerations typically take weeks, not hours — but the tradeoff is a finished oil that retains far more of the plant's original complexity than a heat- or solvent-based extraction.

You'll see this method behind ingredients like helichrysum-infused oil, calendula-infused oil, and the whole-frankincense-resin infusion used in Rivae — the resin itself, not an isolated boswellic acid extract, is what's slow-infused into the base oil.
The Water-Soluble Half
Oil maceration only captures a plant's fat-soluble chemistry. Steam distillation captures the other half — the water-soluble and volatile aromatic compounds — by passing steam through fresh plant material, then condensing that steam back into liquid. What separates out is two things: essential oil (which floats, since oil and water don't mix) and hydrosol, the fragrant, mildly active water that's left behind.
Hydrosols are often treated as a byproduct of essential oil production, but they're a distinct, gentler preparation in their own right — carrying trace amounts of the plant's volatile compounds along with water-soluble constituents that never made it into the essential oil at all. This is the method behind our Rare Native Hydrosols and the water-based portion of our Hydrating Mists, solar-distilled on-site in a copper alembic still.
Concentrated, Not Isolated
CO₂ extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide, rather than a chemical solvent or heat, to pull compounds out of plant material. Under specific pressure and temperature, CO₂ behaves like a solvent — but leaves no residue behind, and because the process runs cooler than steam distillation, it preserves heat-sensitive compounds that distillation can degrade.
The result sits in an interesting middle ground: more concentrated than a whole-plant oil maceration, but still capturing a broader spectrum of the plant's chemistry than an isolated single-compound extract. This is the method behind our Sea Buckthorn, Rosehip, Carrot Root, Amaranthus, and Calendula CO₂ extracts — used where a formula calls for a more concentrated dose of a plant's actives without moving to a fully isolated ingredient.
Rounding Out the Picture
These two show up less often than oil maceration, hydrosol distillation, and CO₂ extraction — but they're genuinely part of the Wilder North line, not just background knowledge. The third is worth knowing for the opposite reason: it's the conventional default, and the clearest contrast to everything else in this module.
Tinctures & Glycerites
Plant material extracted in alcohol (tincture) or vegetable glycerin (glycerite). Alcohol tinctures are generally too drying for direct topical use, but glycerite is a different story — it's a genuinely gentle, humectant-rich extraction we use ourselves, including in Hyalos Elixir, Verbena Mist, and several Apothecary items.
Enfleurage
An old, labor-intensive method where fresh flowers are laid directly into fat until the fat absorbs their aromatic compounds — traditionally used for delicate florals like jasmine or peony that don't survive distillation well. Our Peony Enfleurage Absolute is sourced from a master enfleurage artisan and appears in Perennia Serum and our Enfleurage Mist; Monoi de Tahiti uses the same technique with gardenia.
Standardized Extracts
A single compound isolated and concentrated to a fixed percentage — the conventional cosmetic industry default, and the direct opposite of the whole-plant approach this series is built on.
Putting It Together
Once you can recognize these methods, an ingredient list starts to read differently. A formula built almost entirely from whole-plant oil macerations and hydrosols is telling you something about its formulator's priorities — patience over speed, completeness over concentration. That's worth being able to name to a client, not just feel intuitively.
