Why Gluten is sabotaging your skin + Recipes!

Bread. It's a love/hate relationship.

There's nothing wrong with carbs, our bodies need carbs for easily accessible energy but a bread, pasta and baked goods are no longer what they once were. Many grains, especially wheat, are now grown heavily with pesticides and are highly processed, stripping them of key nutrients. Grains like wheat contain GLUTEN. I know this is a hot button word that has recently reached a mainstream frenzy. Everyone is looking for gluten-free options, but it's not just a fad. Gluten is a huge allergen and many are only just coming to realize this. I personally feel better, lighter and more energized when I don't eat gluten. I just need to stop snacking on my daughter's goldfish.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barely and rye. It gives bread and dough it's elastic texture and helps bind and quite literally, glue foods. It's in so many packaged foods that you'd be hard pressed to find a food free of gluten unless it specifically says "Gluten-Free". It's in everything from soy sauce, to pasta, granola bars, cereal and more... and obviously, bread.

Why our bodies don't like it

Celiac disease is basically an allergy to gluten but you can be intolerant or have a sensitivity to gluten without having celiac disease. It's estimated that 18 million people in the United States have a gluten sensitivity. Gluten is one of the most allergenic foods in the US. Gluten has been linked to bloating irritable bowl syndrome, autism and many other diseases. Some of the symptoms that come along with a gluten sensitivity include brain fog, fatigue and headaches. You may not even know you have a gluten sensitivity. Gluten may also be the culprit if you are having trouble losing weight or getting your skin clear.

How it damages our skin

Gluten isn't easy to digest due to it's glue-like property. If you have a gluten sensitivity, it can inflame your gut, spreading up your digestive track, entire body and causing skin inflammation in the form of acne. Your skin is an elimination organ, meaning toxins leave through your skin which can cause outward problems such as acne, congestion, dullness and inflammation.

Alternatives

I've gone gluten-free in the past and I'll be the first to admit, it's not always easy. There are so many delicious temptations. Luckily, there's a lot of delicious alternatives, and some yummy foods that you may not have even ever dried!

  • Swap bread for a hearty gluten free bread, there's a ton of great alternatives such as Udi's, Brown rice breads and sprouted grain breads. If you want to avoid some of the ingredients in those and go an even less processed route, try using a lettuce or collard leaf as a wrap. Seaweed nori wraps also make good alternatives!
  • Swap crackers for homemade flax crackers, organic tortilla chips, or triangled baked brown rice wraps. Even better, use red peppers or other crunchy veggies for your dips!
  • Swap pasta for filling and hearty quinoa, brown rice, or ancient grains like amaranth.

What if you think you are sensitive or intolerant?

Try an elimination diet. Remove gluten from your diet for 2-3 weeks and notice if there is a change. Give your body time to adjust and detoxify.

Tips to detoxify

  • Take a daily probiotic and digestive enzyme to promote healthy gut bacteria
  • Drink plenty of water with lemon to cleanse and keep things moving
  • Get your share of leafy greens and fruit fiber which will help pull toxins out of your digestive track
