Three DIY Natural Skin Care Recipes with Argan Oil

Three DIY Natural Skin Care Recipes with Argan Oil

Published by Marissa Masterson on May 25th 2017

One of the beautiful things about natural skin care is that it doesn't have to be complicated. Some of the best and most beneficial formulas are just a few ingredients. The customizations are endless, as are the list of pure, plant-based oils. I'm giving you three of my expertly formulated recipes to try at home. Happy Summer!

exfoliating lip scrub

Exfoliating and Moisturizing Lip Scrub

If you're like me and have a nervous habit of biting your lips or applying lip balm, you need to start using a scrub. The lips are made of extremely fragile skin so we use sugar as the exfoliant because the crystals are smoother and more soluble than salt - plus it will taste nice!

What you need:

  • Glass Mixing Bowl
  • Clean Spoon
  • Measuring Cup
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Paper Towels
  • Mason Jar with lid or some other type of jar

  • Rub down the inside of your bowl, inside of mason jar and entire spoon with rubbing alcohol. Make sure they dry completely before you begin. This will kill any bacteria that was lingering, we don't want any bacteria or moisture finding its way into your product because that can reduce the shelf-life.
  • Measure out your carrier oils(argan & sweet almond) into your bowl.
  • Carefully measure your drops of essential oil into the mixture and blend will with your spoon.
  • Slowly add your sugar, little by little. Your oils will probably take about 2 oz but possibly more, so just add until it's the texture you want. I usually add quite a lot of sugar because otherwise you will find you're left with lots of oil leftover when your jar is depleted.
  • Mix well and pour the product into your clean mason jar.

  • You can swap out any of the oils. I chose argan oil for it's multitude of skin-loving benefits and sweet almond oil because it's an affordable superstar. Other favorites are Marula oil and Hemp seed oil.
  • Feel free to add to the recipe with anything non-water-based. Manuka Honey would be a great addition for it's humectant(moisture drawing) abilities and anti-bacterial properties.

Use this scrub a couple times a week or anytime your lips feel dry or flaky.

diy cleansing oil

Cleansing Oil for all skin types

A cleansing oil is a way to naturally deep clean your skin, removing impurities, toxins and unclogging pores.

What you need:

  • Rub down the inside of your bowl and entire spoon with rubbing alcohol. Make sure they dry completely before you begin. This will kill any bacteria that was lingering, we don't want any bacteria or moisture finding its way into your product because that can reduce the shelf-life.
  • Mix all ingredients well, carefully pour into your bottle and voila!

How to use:

  • Pump a dime sized amount of oil into the palm of your hand, rub both hands together to warm the oil and apply to your face, massaging deep into your pores to dissolve impurities.
  • Focus on your problem areas and take your time, letting the oil work in deeply to loosen debris and hardened sebum.
  • Run your washcloth under hot water and wring it out letting it cool a bit but still steamy and warm.
  • Gently hold the washcloth over your face and let the warmth penetrate your pores before wiping and repeating 2-3 times.

There's no need to scrub with this method as the oil and steam do all the heavy lifting. Once you've finished, apply a tad more of your favorite serum or oil and enjoy the glow. This is a deep cleaning method and should be done only every few days to avoid drying. Your skin may start to show signs of detoxification with a breakout here or there but will soon transform into glowing clear skin.

diy clay mask

Personalized Clay Mask

A good clay mask should be in every beauty arsenal. What I love so much is that they're completely customizable so I'm going to give you tons of options and you blend your own! If you want to make this as a one-time wet mask, use 1/2 oz of dry ingredients. If you plan to make it as a batch that can be blended with liquid later, use 4 oz of dry ingredients.

What you need:

  • Glass Mixing Bowl or Mason Jar
  • Clean Spoon
  • Measuring Cup
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Paper Towels
  • Clean jar with lid

Choose your clay:

  • Rose Clay - mild and detoxifying, suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin
  • Bentonite Clay - healing/detoifying
  • Rhassoul Clay - high in nourishing minerals
  • Fuller's Earth Clay - powerfully absorbs oils
  • Green French Clay - the most powerfully detoxifying clay

Choose additions:

  • Ground Chia Seeds - pulls toxins from the skin and helps make your mask gel-like
  • Wheatgrass or supergreens powder - powerful anti-oxidants that prevent aging
  • Ground Bee Pollen or Bee Propolis - benefits aging/acne/inflammation
  • Essential oils - you may want to use tea tree for acne, rose for anti-aging or blue tansy for skin sensitivities.
  • Ground herbs such as:
    • Peppermint - toning, anti-inflammatory
    • Fennel - anti-microbial, toning, firming
    • Eucalyptus - helps with acne
  • Ground flower petals such as:
    • lavender - anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial
    • rose - anti-aging
    • hibiscus - anti-aging
    • calendula - anti-inflammatory

Choose a liquid:

  • Rose Water - anti-aging, hydrating
  • Witch Hazel - toning, anti-bacterial
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - anti-bacterial/acne
  • Honey - anti-inflammatory, moisturizing
  • Argan Oil of your favorite serum - nourishing
  • Aloe Vera Gel - hydrating and soothing

  • Blend all your dry ingredients together in your clean bowl.
  • If you are using this mask immediately, use approximately 1:1 ratio of dry to liquid ingredients. Keep in mind, if you're using a water-based liquid such as, rose water, vinegar or aloe, it will not keep for more than a day. If you are blending this for multiple uses, store your dry and wet ingredients seperately.
  • Once blended to the desired consistency, apply to your face with a cosmetic brush and let sit for approximately 15 minutes. If you used water-based liquid, the mask will likely dry. If you used an oil, it will not dry and can be left applied longer.
  • Rinse with water and a washcloth. Your skin will glow!

diy natural skin care

Skin Benefits of a few of my favorite essential oils:

  • Sweet Orange Oil - This sweet citrus promotes the production of collagen as well as increase the blood flow to the skin which can help with fade spots and wrinkles and is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin. Citrus provide high levels of vitamin c that heal and protect skin. Sweet orange oil also decreases the rate of damage from environmental factors such as uv rays, pollution and toxins. Orange oil is also uplifting and calming which can brighten your mood and balance your hormones.
  • Neroli - This favorite of mine is an intoxicating cross between floral and citrus scents. It is made from the delicate flowers of the bitter orange tree that are hand-picked and handled with great care. It's fantastic for mature and sensitive skin because it repairs skin at the cellular level. Neroli tones the complexion and improves elasticity which diminishes wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. It's highly regenerative, calming, improves circulation, balances oily skin and calms sensitive skin with it's anti-microbial properties.
  • Ginger - Ginger oil comes from the ginger root but is a more potent source of benefits because it has a higher concentration of gingerol. Ginger contains a high level of anti-oxidants that prevent free radical damage and premature aging. It's also highly antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial which make it a great addition to acne treatments or skin sensitivity issues and allergies.
  • Rose - Around 60 roses go into making just one drop of rose otto essential oil. Make sure you buy organic or wild crafted pure Bulgarian rose Otto. This valuable oil has among the strongest anti-bacterial qualities compared to other oils. It's extremely beneficial for mature, wrinkled, dry and sensitive skin. Rose is ultra regenerative, healing, firming, toning and anti-inflammatory. It has the ability to repair broken capillaries and restores moisture. In addition, when mixed with other beneficial oils, it makes skin more permeable for the other ingredients.
  • Helichrysum - The flavanoids in helichrysum are effective against bacteria and irritating skin conditions such as eczema. It can also block UV damage that causes aging. It has strong anti-bacterial, Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that heal acne, redness and inflammation. Helichrysum is highly regenerating and healing, great for mature skin, wrinkles, cellulite, acne, dilated pores, stretch marks and circles under the eyes.
  • Ylang Ylang - This ultra floral oil prevents signs of aging and helps to keep skin youthful and hydrated. It's antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities soothe irritated skin and heal acne. As a bonus, the aroma of ylang ylang can reduce stress and anxiety
